Mietta O'Donnell (6 January 1950 – 4 January 2001)[1] was a Melbourne-based Australianrestaurateur, chef and food writer, described in her later years as Australia's leading culinary publisher and critic.[2] She was also a noted arts and music patron, and a song competition is named in her honour.
Career
[edit]O'Donnell's grandparents were Italian migrants, Teresa and Mario Vigano, who arrived in Melbourne from Milan in 1928[citation needed] to establish Mario's Restaurant in Exhibition Street, Melbourne, which they ran for over thirty years. O'Donnell, with her partner Tony Knox, opened her restaurant Mietta's in Brunswick Street, Fitzroy North, in June 1974. Mietta's moved in 1985 to Alfred Place in central Melbourne, eventually closing in 1995.[citation needed]
In February 1992, Jex Saarelaht and Kate Ceberano performed at the restaurant. They recorded and later released an album titled Open the Door – Live at Mietta's.
O'Donnell was killed in a car accident in Tasmania while travelling to speak at a food and wine seminar.[2] Her funeral was attended by over 1,000 people from the arts, politics, and the culinary world.[1]

Mietta O’Donnell was arguably the person who defined haute cuisine in Australia – first through her 21 years as a restauranteur and in later years as the country’s leading culinary publisher and critic. Her grandparents, Mario and Teresa Vigano, arrived in Melbourne from Milan in 1928. They went on to establish the legendary “Mario’s” restaurant, which they ran for more than thirty years. Mietta was influenced by their entertainment flair from an early age.
Initially trained as a journalist Mietta and her partner Tony Knox opened the original ‘Mietta’s restaurant’ in Fitzroy, Melbourne in June 1974. The menu, “drawn from the four corners of the world” was an early example of “fusion cuisine” and changed weekly. It was very different from the predominantly British cuisine of Melbourne. O’Donnell employed renowned French chefs, such as Jacques Raymond and Pierre Stinzy, and French wines, in a successful attempt to both add savour to and improve the palate of serious diners.
