Introduction
The Aminu Kano Centre for Democratic Studies, Mambayya House, Kano was founded in November 2000 as a research and training unit of the Bayero University, Kano, Nigeria, in the premises vacated by the defunct Centre for Democratic Studies (CDS), which was established by the Federal Government of Nigeria in 1989. When the CDS was scrapped in 1996, the Federal Government donated the building to Bayero University, Kano. The then Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Alhaji (Dr) Gidado Idris GCON, mni, formally handed over Mambayya House to the former Vice Chancellor, Bayero University, Kano, Professor Musa Abdullahi, on March 3, 1999.
In response to the urgent need for answers to the complex questions raised by the nascent democratic order in Nigeria, and to contribute to the consolidation of the gains of an emerging democracy, Bayero University, Kano established the Centre in November 2000. It is a non – profit making organization, and operates as a relatively autonomous organ within the University’s organizational structure. However, it is subject to the University’s regulations in respect of financial accountability and academic standards. The Centre seeks to achieve its aims through focused research and training activities.
