The eight areas represent the range of intelligent human functioning. While each area is identified as a discrete intelligence, each also interacts with others in complex ways to produce the richness of human behaviour and achievement. Ordinary human functioning requires such interaction. Many people will exhibit a highly-developed intelligence, not perhaps in their occupation, but in pastimes, interests, hobbies, in personal projects, or in social and personal relationships. Kathleen Lynch of University College Dublin (UCD) 2 was the first person in Ireland to write about Gardner's work and to discuss its potential for Irish education. In 1989, she referred to the theory and its potential for education, in her book The Hidden Curriculum 3.
